Profile

Bill Anton was born in Chicago in 1957, and later moved to Prescott, Arizona. He chose to live in the west because he is so inspired by the Sierra Nevada, Sangre de Cristo, and, ". . . a hundred other mountain ranges within the majestic Rocky Mountains."

Bill graduated form Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English. His true love, however, was depicting the beautiful scenery and the wonderful cowboy images of the great west. He comments, “I do not see myself as a biographer of the cowboy. I know some artists feel they are recording history on the ranches as it is today, but the focus of my work has always been mood and passion. I want the viewer to feel the drama of the atmosphere and the mystery of a western night. An artist under the spell of the west has the priviledge of marshalling the virtues of landscape, figure, and equine painting into one supremely paintable subject: the American cowboy.”

Anton studied with Michael Lynch and Ned Jacob who encouraged him to paint from life. He has been drawn to the works of Zorn, Sorolla, Payne and Frank Tenney Johnson. “While the nature of my work necessitates much studio time, more and more of my painting is done outside. Having painted landscape studies for years, I’m now doing more figural work - mostly horses - from life where spontaneity, passion, color and drawing collide in exciting results.”

Bill Anton's work has been published in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Equine Images, Western Horseman, Art-Talk, and Architectural Digest. He has also been prominently featured in The West, A Treasury of Art and Literature and The Big Round-Up, The Best of Cowboy Poetry. Corporate collections that include his work are Sears, Dupont, State Farm Insurance, Bank of America, Hewlett Packard, and Trust Company of the West.

Anton’s award winning work has been displayed at the Prix de West, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, The National Center for American Western Art, The Thomas Gilcrease Museum, The Old West Museum and The National Museum of Wildlife Art.
