Profile
National Academician Don Stone has an international reputation as a
contemporary American impressionist. His formal education in the
arts began at Gloucester High School with four years of fine arts
study, followed by a course of study at Vesper George School of Art
in Boston. Upon completion of art school, he went into the Navy and
then moved to Rockport, MA. There he had the good
fortune of moving next door to Paul Strisik, who became his mentor
and changed his professional artistic life.
He has been painting on Monhegan Island in Maine
for more than fifty years, ten of those year-round. This experience
and his childhood in Gloucester, Massachusetts, have given him a
remarkable opportunity to work with and observe the working
fishermen of Monhegan and Gloucester, and to study the rugged coast
and rough seas of Monhegan.
With few exceptions Stone paints on location. He often returns
to his studio to work on larger
canvases, using the small field studies and the years of information he
has stored to create his wonderful works.
