Profile John got his start painting early in life when he was still in junior high back in the early 60s. “I remember one painting experience in particular down on the Croton River near Ossining, New York where I grew up. At that time in my life I had never heard the term Plein Air and just thought all landscape painters worked out in the elements. I’m sure my memory doesn’t fail me; it was a dismal experience standing on a friend’s dock and trying to make sense of an intricate fall scene on the river. After several more such attempts my mother enrolled me in private lessons with a high school art teacher who really didn’t know which end of the brush to hold. All I remember was going out into the backyard with another student and being told to paint this pine tree. After about an hour we were brought back into the studio for a critique and some “instruction”. The “instruction” consisted primarily of our teacher picking up all the green paint on our palettes and feverishly hacking away at our canvases. At that point the instructor proudly stood up like a peacock and said, "That’s how you paint a pine tree!" "I soon lost all interest in art, at least for a time, and didn’t return to painting until I got out of college and was married. Sometime in 1983 I remember walking past an Aaron Brothers art store after work in Ventura, California where I then resided. I was attracted by the distinct smell of turpentine and was transformed in my mind back to New York all those years before when I first opened a new set of oils under the Christmas tree. That and a book on painting by noted artist Emile Gruppe’ were all it took to set me back on the path to a lifelong pursuit of artistic expression.” John has been at it ever since. His education in art began with frequent trips into the field tempered with quality instruction at venues such as the Scottsdale Artists' School with some of America’s foremost artists and instructors. He has been tutored by some outstanding personal friends over the years such as Dick Heichberger and the late Don Miles, to name but a few. John has been invited to
show at several high profile shows such as the annual Maynard Dixon Show in
Southern Utah and the Whistle Pik Gallery Christmas Miniature Show. He
recently won the quick draw at this year’s “Alliance for the Varied Arts” in
Cache Valley, Utah. John has had 5 paintings in the "Top 100
Arts for the Parks" show and has also shown 3 times in the Oil Painters of
America National shows. He has shown his work over the years in several art
communities, including Laguna Beach, Scottsdale, Carmel and now in Park
City, Utah with the famed Taminah Gallery where he will have a two-man show
with Wildlife Artist Greg Wilson sometime this winter. John also shows in
Bountiful, Utah with the Apple Frame Gallery. John’s work hangs in many
private and corporate collections and has been seen in various State and
National publications. One noted assignment of recent years had John
painting a number of large murals for the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints in cooperation with artist Linda Christensen. John now
lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with his beautiful wife Teresa and their four
children. He is currently teaching a class at Salt Lake Community College on
landscape painting fundamentals to a group of very serious students and
professionals. Workshops Principles of Landscaping, Salt Lake Community College - Redwood Campus, Fall 2005.
